Backpack Process Model (BPPM): A Process Mining Approach for Curricular Analytics

Curricular analytics is the area of learning that looks for insights and evidence on relationship between curricular elements degree achievement outcomes. For higher education institutions, can be useful identifying strengths weaknesses curricula justifying changes in pathways students. This work presents study trajectories as processes (i.e., sequence events) using process mining techniques. Specifically, Backpack Process Model (BPPM) defined a novel model to unveil student trajectories, not by courses they take, but according have failed yet pass. The usefulness proposed validated through analysis N = 4466 engineering students considering first their program. We found differences backpack resulted retention or dropout; specific larger initial sizes were associated with proportion dropout. BPPM contribute understanding how handle must retake, providing information could designing implementing timely interventions institutions.
